Trump floats possible legal challenge to New York tax on luxury second homes

Aug 11 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday ‌that he was assessing whether ‌the federal government could mount a legal ​challenge to avert a progressive surcharge on luxury second homes in New York City.

Trump called New ‌York's new "pied-a-terre" ⁠tax "dangerous political experiment" in a social media post.

The new ⁠tax - named after a French term for a secondary residence ​that translates ​as "foot on ​the ground" - was passed ‌into law as part of the New York state budget in May.

"I am looking to see if the Federal Government has any ‌legal right to ​avert this disaster," ​Trump said.

The ​tax has already been ‌challenged in state court ​and a ​Staten Island judge on Monday temporarily blocked its rollout, according ​to ‌U.S. media.
