President Donald Trump appeared to forget that he was the president during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot in Washington, D.C. — and instead blamed former President Joe Biden and “The Biden FBI” for the violent and unprecedented attack.
“THE BIDEN FBI PLACED 274 AGENTS INTO THE CROWD ON JANUARY 6,” Trump wrote at 12:38 a.m in a Truth Social post. “If this is so, which it is, a lot of very good people will be owed big apologies. What a SCAM - DO SOMETHING!!!”

Trump made the false claim despite the fact that Biden was not sworn into office until two weeks later on Jan. 20, 2021, during the inauguration. Trump’s nominee, Christopher Wray, was serving as director of the FBI at the time of the attack.
In December 2024, the Department of Justice said it found no evidence that the FBI, which classified the attacks as an act of domestic terrorism, had any involvement in the Jan. 6 riots that led to multiple deaths and injuries to dozens of law enforcement officers.
On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump told his supporters at his “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C., to “fight like hell” against what he claimed was a stolen election.
He urged the crowd to march to the Capitol, where Congress was counting the electoral votes and preparing to certify Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election. Just minutes later, the armed mob stormed and breached the Capitol building.
Following the incident, several criminal Jan. 6 defendants admitted their actions were in response to Trump’s calls.

A federal grand jury indicted Trump on four felony counts in 2023 related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The case was later dismissed in November 2024 after Trump beat out Biden in the presidential election under the guise of the Justice Department’s policy against prosecuting a sitting president.
Meanwhile, Trump has referred to Jan. 6 as a “day of love” and praised the rioters as “patriots.”

Trump mass pardoned all participants in the attack, including many who brutally bludgeoned and maced police officers.
Trump has repeatedly made unfounded claims about the day rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol.
Last month, he falsely spewed a conspiracy theory that the FBI instigated the violence.
“It was just revealed that the FBI had secretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax,” Trump wrote in a Sep. 27 Truth Social post.
The POTUS added: “That’s right, as it now turns out, FBI Agents were at, and in, the January 6th Protest, probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists, but certainly not as ‘Law Enforcement Officials.’”
