House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi endorsed Connie Chan on Monday in the heated race to replace her, giving the San Francisco district supervisor's campaign a shot in the arm as she vies for a second-place finish in June's primary.

“I know and love this district,” Pelosi, who's retiring, said in an endorsement video in which she appeared alongside Chan. “I know the Congress, and I know Connie. I’m proud to endorse Democrat Connie Chan and ask you to join me in electing her to Congress.”

Polls show Chan trailing state Sen. Scott Wiener by a wide margin, but virtually tied with Saikat Chakrabarti, a tech centimillionaire who previously served as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-N.Y.) campaign manager and chief of staff. Chan and Chakrabarti are the popular choices among progressives.

The top two finishers in next month's primary will go on to compete in November's general election.

“I remember seeing San Francisco for the first time when I was 13 years old," Chan said in a statement following the endorsement. "I did not speak a word of English, but I had heard this was a sanctuary city where anything was possible. Today, to be endorsed by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi to follow her in Congress – I know that is true. That's San Francisco, and that is the city we are fighting for."

Chan represents San Francisco's Richmond District on the city's Board of Supervisors.
