Hunter Biden has offered his assessment on why President Donald Trump won the 2024 election, claiming that Democrats “literally melted down” by giving up on his father.
In an interview with Jaime Harrison as part of the former Democratic National Committee chair’s new podcast “At Our Table,” set to debut on Thursday, Biden suggested Democrats were wrong to pressure Joe Biden to exit the 2024 presidential race.
“We lost the election because we did not remain loyal to the leader of the party,” Biden said, according to experts shared with multiple outlets in advance of the show’s release. “That’s my position. We had the advantage of incumbency. We had advantage of an incredibly successful administration and the Democratic Party literally melted down.”
Harrison appears to share Hunter Biden’s view, telling Semafor the outcome of the election would have been different if Democrats had the loyalty “Republicans have for Donald Trump.”
Joe Biden announced he would withdraw his candidacy in July 2024 after his poor performance in a CNN debate against Trump the month prior raised serious concerns about his health and mental acuity in the final months of the race.
Polls also showed Biden would have faced an uphill battle against Trump. His vice president, Kamala Harris, replaced him as the party’s nominee. While her candidacy appeared to improve the Democrats’ odds in the race, she ultimately lost to Trump. Republicans also retained control of the House and regained control of the Senate.
Hunter Biden, who was found guilty of illegally owning a gun and pleaded guilty to tax charges, received a “full and unconditional pardon” from his father, who claimed his son was “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.”
In the months since leaving the White House, Joe Biden has faced scrutiny over his decision to seek reelection in the first place. “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” a book co-authored by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson, claimed that some of those closest to the former president worked to conceal his diminished state.
Hunter Biden, who is speaking out for the first time since the 2024 race, contested the allegation of a cover-up.
“What sells, Jaime? What sells is the idea of a conspiracy,” he said.
Besides Hunter Biden, Jaime is also expected to release interviews with Democratic Govs. Tim Walz (Minn.) and Wes Moore (Md.), among others.
