Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral service will be held Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral, where family members and dignitaries, including former Presidents George W. Bush and Joe Biden and all four living former vice presidents, are expected to be in attendance.
Cheney died on Nov. 3 from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, his family said. He was 84.
The nation’s 46th vice president served two terms in office under Bush, who will deliver one of the eulogies, according to the program posted on the Cathedral’s website. Other speakers include Cheney’s daughter, former congresswoman Liz Cheney, his grandchildren and Pete Williams, a former assistant Defense Department spokesman and ex-NBC News justice correspondent.
Cheney is considered one of the most powerful and divisive vice presidents in U.S. history for his role in pushing the 2003 invasion of Iraq after 9/11, his advocacy for the waterboarding of detainees and his aggressive efforts to expand presidential power — earning him the nickname Darth Vader.
President Trump, who clashed with both Liz and Dick Cheney, is not expected to attend the funeral service, nor is Vice President JD Vance.
Before becoming vice president, Cheney served as defense secretary from 1989 to 1993, under President George H. W. Bush. He spent 10 years in Congress representing Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989. He also served as chief of staff for President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977.
